Johnson Propeller Chart: Choose the Right Propeller for Your Boat Engine
Do you want to change your Johnson boat engine’s old propellers? For several reasons, you may compulsorily require to change the propellers of your boat engine. In such a situation, you mostly need detailed information about propellers and your engine.
It’s a pretty typical scenario that anyone may find himself in the middle of confusion regarding which propeller to buy or which propeller would be right for your engine. If your scenario also depicts the same, believe me, you need an accurate Johnson propeller chart to determine the right propeller for your Johnson boat engine.
Well, breathe a sigh of relief because you have come to the right place to eliminate your confusion. So, buckle up, and let’s get to know in detail and choose the right propeller for your boat engine.
Reading Guide of Propeller Chart (Manual Guide)
Before you jump into the chart, you must know a few factors to understand the chart correctly.
Specifications and Details of Engine
Model, horsepower, make, model, and years have been provided with every chart. So, match the information before choosing the right propeller for your boat engine.
Pitch and Diameter:
- Diameter: The diameter of a propeller is measured in terms of the circumference of the imaginary circle produced by the propeller’s rotation.
- Pitch: To put it simply, the pitch of a propeller is the theoretical distance, as in, the distance a propeller will travel with one full rotation of the propeller. The higher the engine’s rotational pitch, the quicker the boat will move.
In this guide, every chart has a diameter and pitch indication information for measuring propeller size. For instance, if a propeller size is 15 X 20, this means the diameter of the propeller is 15 inches, and the pitch is 20 inches.
Miscellaneous:
- In the “Length of the Boat” column of the chart, generally, the length of the respective boat is depicted.
- But if you find any name other than the length number, like “Pontoon, Cruiser, High Performance,” these are the name of the Johnson boat model.
- Moreover, if you find “All-Purpose” in the length column, it means that the propeller size will be applicable for all the above-mentioned model’s boats.
- RH in the chart means the propeller’s rotation is Right-Handed, clockwise.
- LH in the chart means the propeller’s rotation is Light-Handed, counter-clockwise.
- Extra Cup means the trailing edges of the propeller’s blades are geometrically curved toward the pressure face, and the curve is relatively high in the “extra cup” propeller.
- “(A)” “(B)” in the chart means that the respective information is the same for every mentioned boat, and the respective information is provided below each chart.
- Quicksilver company’s Propeller Number with the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Propeller Number for each boat has also been provided for your convenience.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)
Installing an over-pitched or oversized propeller in the boat engine can prevent the engine from reaching its optimal cruising rpm, ultimately increasing engine heat and wear. Even more than that, the engine’s performance may suffer, and its lifespan may be shortened.
A four-bladed propeller offers the most thrust and smooth cruising performance, whereas a three-bladed propeller often offers top-speed performance. Four blades, however, offer certain unique characteristics. Especially if the hull is stern-heavy, they frequently offer additional lift towards the stern, which basically aids in hull acceleration.
Adding Cup to the propeller actually increases the pitch distance. When the pitch distance increases, the boat covers more distance in one full-time propeller rotation. So, at the same RPM, the cupped propeller cross more distance than the propeller without a cup. So, yes, adding a cup to a propeller definitely increases the boat’s speed.
Final Insight
Okay, that was all. So, next time you are in confusion regarding choosing the right propeller for your Johnson boat engine, I hope this Johnson propeller chart will definitely fill up your need.
All you have to do is to
- Match the horsepower, year, model, and number of spline teeth with the given information first,
- Then detect the right propeller from the chart
- After that, match the length of your boat in the given information in the length column
- Finally, choose the right OEM or quicksilver propeller-numbered propeller for your engine.
So, yeah, your confusion about choosing the right propeller for your Johnson boat engine is finally eliminated.
