700r4 Transmission Governor Problems: 3 Issues with Fixes
Anything wrong with the vehicle always brings extra tension. Because we always think it’s going to cost us a big figure. A bad 700r4 transmission governor is one such tension.
Don’t worry. Before getting to a conclusion first figure out the problems and try to solve them if possible. But what are the 700r4 transmission governor problems?
The transmission governor issues are generally related to the shifting. Early shifting and no shifting are two major problems. In that case, you’ve to check the valves, clean them and lubricate them if needed. Gear problems are also another problem. It’s recommended to replace the gear if there is any serious issue.
The above guide might not be helpful if you are not a professional repairer. That’s what a whole article is waiting for you. So let’s dig in.
3 Most Common 700r4 Transmission Governor Problems: Quick Overview
If you’re in a hurry or just looking for a gist then have a look at the table below.
Problems | Solution |
No shifting problem | 1. Clean the valve and gear 2. Lubricate the vale |
Gear related problems | Replace it |
Early shifting problem | 1. Ensure proper placement of every part 2. Remove dirt from the governor (valves and gear) |
So now I’ve reached the explanatory segments. Read the whole segment to figure out the reason and solution to all the problems.
Problem 1: No Shifting Problem
Governor not shifting is a problem that generally occurs without any major damage or accident.
Even if you do nothing it can happen. In some cases, it doesn’t shift until you reach high RPM such as 3500-5000. However, you may be thinking then what’s the reason behind it?
First of all, it can happen if the throttle valve is stuck in its bore. So when you accelerate to a higher RPM then it gets back to the normal state and the governor shifts.
And the next thing is the gear inside the governor is stuck and that’s why it’s not shifting.
Solution
The above problems are occurring most probably because of dirt. Sometimes because of lubrication, the valve can get stuck. So let’s see how to solve the issue.
- The first step is to remove the driveshaft and then remove the yolk.
- Now take off 6/8 bolts that surround the tail housing on the transmission. Then you’ll find the 700r4 governor location.
- Now you can see the governor remaining solid with 3-4 screws. Unscrew them and take them off.
- Clean it properly. Especially the valve area.
- Lubricate it (If needed)
- Again screw everything you unscrewed. And you are done.
Problem 2: Gear Related Problems
Next problem you might face with the governor gear. There can be generally 2 problems. First, the gear is broken, and second, the gear is stuck.
The gear can break because of any collision. Or, because of improper assembly/disassembly. The second reason is very natural. You can break it unknowingly while detaching some other parts.
Solution
When it’s broken the solution is to get new gear and replace it. However, you can try removing it and check out whether it can be used after slight repair or not.
And if the gear is stuck the reason is most likely the valve. There might be dirt or lubrication required. In that case, take off the driveshaft, yolk, and the governor (Detailed guide in the first problem). And then clean and lubricate the gear.
Expert tip: It’s never recommended to continue with worn-out gear. Governor gear is pretty cheap and the installation process is also easy. So it’s better to replace it if you find it’s not okay.
Problem 3: Early Shifting Problems
Shifting too early is another common issue of 700R4 governors. It’s hard to determine the exact reason for this problem. There can be so many reasons and generally, it’s all about identifying one by one
Sometimes, it can be a wobble shaft. Again it can be a dirty valve or unpositioned weight pins.
Below, let’s get the solution to this problem.
Solution
- You can check whether they are wobbly or not. Remember the shaft journal will be perfect with no scoring.
- Check the valve position and dirt around it. To do so, take off the governor and clean it.
- Check the overall condition and placement of the weight pins. If you get them unpositioned, fix the position.

- Never act busy when you disassemble or reassemble any part.
- If you find any part of the governor worn-out then I suggest replacing it.
- If you figure out any irregular symptoms then don’t continue driving with that.
- If you are not confident about taking any part, don’t do it.
- Always follow the user manual of 700R4 if you want to diagnose or reassemble any part.
- If you are not an expert, for any problem go to a nearby repair shop.
